After Waiting 80 Years A 97-Year-Old Woman Finally Got Her Wish To Go, To Prom
As a teenager Henel Danis could not afford to go
to her own prom– but donned her best ball gown to go to her granddaughter’s
prom as her date at Pilgrim High School Warwick, Rhode Island ‘I couldn’t
keep up with the kids (when she was in high school). I didn’t really fit in. Danis
told WJAR
We were in the middle of a depression and money
was scarce.’ But for decades, she wanted to go to prom and her granddaughter,
Julie Huddon, felt obliged to make that happen, giving her grandmother a
‘promposal’ on a paper heart that said: ‘Grammie, will you be my prom queen and
go to senior prom with me?.’ Huddon told WJAR: ‘I got a crown for her and wrote
her a note, asking her to be my date to prom. She’s mentioned a couple times
about not being able to go to her prom…As soon as I gave it (the promposal) to
her, she loved it.
The prom is not the only bucket list item Huddon
is helping her grandmother check off. She has been helping Danis fullfil as
many wishes as she can as she nears 100-years-old. Huddon said: ‘We’ve been
doing a lot of things that she has said she wanted to do. She sat on Santa’s
lap for the first time in December. I never know about her she’s full of
surprises.’ At the prom, Danis was named the honorary prom queen and danced to
the ‘Hully Gully,’ the ‘Cha-Cha Slide,’ and ‘Cupid Shuffle.’ ‘Well, if they
know how to do the “Hully Gully,” I’ll do it again,’ Danis said before heading
to the prom.
Huddon even bought a orchid dress for her
grandmother and the two took a trolley to the dance. Danis said: ‘It’s a nice
dress, a long dress. She says, “you’re going to prom,” so here I am.’
